From Texas oil fields to world-class record-breaking gas discoveries in Papua New Guinea, Phil’s career has been built on finding opportunities others overlooked. The Elk-Antelope fields he discovered are now the foundation of the Papua LNG project.

Exploration and discovery
InterOil’s exploration program in Papua New Guinea is central to Phil Mulacek’s career. Under his leadership, the company advanced exploration in the Gulf Province, including the Elk–Antelope and Triceratops fields, three back-to-back world-class discoveries.
Building an energy enterprise
InterOil combined exploration with refining and downstream activities. Its development illustrates the breadth of work involved in building a vertically integrated energy company: engineering, field operations, infrastructure and commercial planning.

Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea was central to InterOil’s business. The company’s history connects the construction of refining infrastructure at Napa Napa with the complete distribution of fuels (Jet fuel, petrol, diesel, and other refined products) to the nation. This was followed by the discovery of the world-class 1.6 billion BOE onshore gas resources.

Elk and Antelope
The Elk and Antelope fields lie in Papua New Guinea’s Gulf Province. Their discovery and appraisal formed an important chapter in InterOil’s development. Phil’s role belongs to that exploration and company-building history; ownership changed after his retirement as chief executive in 2013.
